As the 2025 SA Rugby Women’s Premier Division nears its conclusion, the Golden Lions Women have faced a season of narrow defeats, strong performances, and undeniable progress. While the results have not always gone their way, the team has shown immense resilience and a growing ability to challenge some of the country’s best sides.
Their third match of the season saw them travel to Bloemfontein to take on the Cheetahs, and the Lions delivered one of their strongest first-half performances of the campaign. With sharp execution and dominant play, they took a 21-12 lead into halftime, putting themselves in a prime position to claim their first win. However, despite the Cheetahs receiving three yellow cards, the Lions struggled to capitalize on their numerical advantage, and in a heartbreaking finish, the hosts snatched victory with a 79th-minute try, sealing a 31-26 result.
Returning home to face Western Province, the Lions were met with an electrifying atmosphere following the men’s team’s victory over the Stormers. However, the visitors started aggressively, scoring early and racing to a 31-10 halftime lead. The Lions, though, responded with a spirited second-half performance, outscoring WP 15-12 in the final 40 minutes. Their attacking efforts earned them a crucial bonus point for scoring four tries, a testament to their growing confidence on the ball. Thobile Msizazwe continued her impressive form, scoring in every match so far, bringing her tally to 30 points across 310 minutes of play.
The following week’s clash against Eastern Province Queens was seen as a must-win encounter, given the Lions’ strong record against the opposition in recent seasons. Playing in extreme wind conditions, they battled against the elements and their opponents, managing to edge a 12-5 lead at halftime. However, in another late twist, the Queens found a way through after the final hooter, securing a 31-24 win and leaving the Lions still searching for their breakthrough victory.
A formidable challenge awaited in the Bulls Daisies, the only fully professional team in the tournament. The Lions entered the match knowing it would be a test of physicality and tactical discipline. The Bulls set the tempo early, establishing a 45-0 halftime lead, but the Lions refused to stand back. As the game progressed, they gained a stronger foothold in the scrums and held their own in the physical exchanges. Their persistence paid off when Ratidzo Gurajena came off the bench to score a well-executed try from a quick tap, a moment that reflected the team’s unwavering spirit despite the eventual scoreline.
With a bye week providing a crucial opportunity to regroup, the focus now shifts to their final match of the season—a home fixture against the Sharks Women on Saturday, March 22nd, at Noordheuwel, Krugersdorp. A victory or a draw could see the Lions climb in the standings, an outcome that would serve as a fitting reward for their resilience throughout the campaign.
Though this season has presented its challenges, it has also been one of growth and perseverance. The Golden Lions Women have consistently shown that they are capable of competing at this level, and as they prepare for their final match, they will be looking to end their campaign on a high note. One last chance to roar, one last chance to rise.
