Matchday Checklist

Pre-match preparation checklist

Uniform and equipment:
  • Match day Jersey
  • Alternative Jersey
  • Shorts
  • Boots
  • Socks
  • Whistle
  • Watch
  • Cards (Red, Yellow and Blue)
  • A referee is always dressed neatly and professionally upon arrival at the field (tracksuit or golf shirt with chino/jean) and on the field.
  • A referee is to conduct him/herself professionally (don’t draw attention)
Rules and regulations review:
  • Referee to prepare for each game by reviewing previous report.
  • Go through laws and scenarios
Communication with teams and coaches:
  • Upon arrival at the field (ideally 60 minutes before kickoff) advise the match organiser of your arrival
  • Before kick-off do your Boksmart field inspection
  • Look for the captains to perform the coin toss
  • Ask about the teams colours to ensure there is no kit clash

In-game decision-making guide

Handling difficult situations:
  • Remain Calm
  • Don’t get involved in debate or argument
Effective communication with players and officials:
  • Respectable and calm tone
  • Players – When a team needs to be addressed explain the matter at hand in a calm tone. Don’t shout and don’t point your finger. (You can be stern without raising your voice)
  • Officials – Explain to your team what you require of them.

Post-match procedures

Reporting and documentation:
  • Yellow and Red card reporting – in the event that it was given
  • Blue card reporting form – in the event that it was given
  • All forms to be submitted via “Whostheref”
Feedback and improvement:
  • Referee to do a self review on the game and go through the report the Performance Enhancer submitted in preparation for the feedback to be held before the next match.
