Johannesburg, [03/10/2024] – In past 2 months, the Golden Lions Rugby Union hosted a remarkable turnout of 1,500 young athletes for the TRY Rugby Clinics, showcasing the immense talent and passion for rugby among South Africa’s youth. The events (which took place at the University of Johannesburg) not only highlighted the skills of young players but also laid the groundwork for future opportunities through scholarships and competitive teams.
Among the standout participants, four exceptional athletes have been identified for scholarships to prestigious schools, including Jeppe High School for Boys and King Edward VII School (KES). These scholarships are aimed at nurturing their talent and providing them with a pathway to excel both academically and athletically.
Additionally, special clinics for under-17 players were conducted to identify members for the TRY All-Star team, which will represent the organization at the upcoming Saint Stithians Rugby Festival next year. The TRY All-Star teams for under-15 and under-13 players were also selected through intensive coaching clinics, with plans to compete in other Easter rugby festivals and prestigious tournaments, including iQhawe Week.
The initiative has received significant endorsement from the Department of Arts, Sports & Culture, with both national and Gauteng officials in attendance. Deputy Minister Peace Mabe visited the tournament, addressing the participants and expressing her support with a financial commitment to the TRY program.
“Programs like TRY not only develop sporting talent but also foster community cohesion and provide safe spaces for our youth,” said Deputy Minister Mabe. “It’s inspiring to see so many young athletes dedicated to their sport.”
In a collaborative effort to ensure safety, particularly in neighbourhoods affected by gang-related violence, a “peace initiative” was implemented during the event. This initiative aimed to create a secure environment for all participants, allowing them to focus on their training and competition without fear.
The success of the UJ Rugby Clinics underscores the importance of youth sports in building character, discipline, and teamwork among young people. As TRY continues to expand its reach and impact, the organization remains committed to creating opportunities for youth across the country.
The finals will be taking place:
